When Palms Become a Problem
Here's the catch with palms: you can't prune them shorter. They grow from a single point at the top, and if you cut that, the tree dies. So the small palm planted near a house in Bloomfield or Calare years ago can end up 15 or 20 metres tall with heavy fronds hanging over the roof, pool, and outdoor area.
Dead fronds that don't get cleaned off build up into a thick skirt around the trunk. Rats, cockroaches, and spiders love it in there. Fruit from Cocos palms and Date palms drops in buckets, staining driveways and attracting flying foxes at night. The root systems on bigger palms can also crack underground plumbing — especially the older clay and terracotta pipes you find in established Orange properties.
How We Remove Palms
Palm timber is fibrous, not woody. It doesn't split or behave the same way as hardwood when you cut it. Our arborists know how to work with it.
If there's clear space around the palm, we can drop the whole trunk in one go with a directional cut. More often though — especially in Orange's suburban areas where the palm is hemmed in by the house, a pool, or fencing — we section it from the top down, lowering each piece by rope. The stump gets ground below ground level. Palm stumps take forever to break down on their own, so grinding is the way to go unless you want an ugly lump sitting in the garden for years.
Palm Maintenance If You Want to Keep It
Not ready to pull the pin on the palm? Fair enough. We do regular frond clean-ups — dead fronds, seed pods, fruit clusters all removed, leaving the palm looking tidy and cutting down on the pest and debris issues. For taller palms, this means a cherry picker or a skilled climber. It's not a weekend DIY job.
We look after residential and commercial properties across Bloomfield, Calare, Glenroi, Lucknow, Spring Hill, Clifton Grove, Nashdale, Borenore. A good chunk of our palm maintenance clients are body corporates and property managers who need regular, scheduled service to keep their grounds tidy and compliant.
